Artist's Description
The chinese developed many wonderful things including this simple system of counting for multiplying numbers. In this example, 14 times 14 equals 196. The 16 dots stand for "one's" the 8 dots (top and bottom totalling 8) stand for "ten's" and the single dot farthest to the left, stand for "hundred's." Since 1 is borrowed from the 16, and added to the ten's colum making the number 9, that leaves 1 in the hundred's. The resulting number is 196. Brilliant!
